Children's pensions

If you die in service, a pension will be paid to your eligible children who are under age 18, or between ages 18 and 25 if eligible full-time students.

Please note: Children born more than 10 months after your death are not eligible to receive the pension.

Children’s pensions are:

  • paid fortnightly,
  • not income tested by ESSSuper, and
  • increased in line with any increase in the Consumer Price Index for all capital cities.

How much pension is payable?

If there are:

  • Between 1 to 4 eligible children, a pension equal to 5% of your final average salary is payable to each child.
  • More than 4 eligible children, a pension equal to 20% of your final average salary is divided equally.

Children aged between 18 and 25 who are full-time students

For every full-time student of a deceased member of the New Scheme aged 18 to 25, a separate Declaration of Eligibility for a Full Time Student Pension and TFN Declaration must be completed. These forms must then be completed annually.

The full-time student pension will cease at age 25 or before, if the child ceases to be a full-time student or fails to produce the annual declaration required.

If you are a full-time student, remember to submit your declaration annually to ensure you continue to receive the pension..
