Recent news media has highlighted that members who have lost contact with their super fund will now be transferred to the Federal Government instead of the State Government.
The media has incorrectly focussed on inactive accounts, i.e. accounts where no transactions have recently been recorded.
We wish to advise members that ESSSuper will only transfer lump sum unclaimed benefits to the Federal Government if a member is age 65 or over and the benefit remains unclaimed after all reasonable efforts to find them have been made. This does not apply to pension benefits.
If you have been receiving correspondence such as newsletters and Annual Benefit Statements from ESSSuper or if you are an active member where you or your employer are making contributions to your account, or you are under age 65, your benefit will remain with ESSSuper. However, if two items of written communication from ESSSuper have been sent to your last known address and are returned unclaimed, you may be registered as a lost member with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
It is important to keep your contact details up-to-date so we can keep you informed of your super, and offer you the services you need to make the most of your retirement. You can check and update your details securely online at any time by registering for an ESSSuper members online account.
If you think you may have missing super from other employment you may like to use the ATO Super Seeker website to see if there is unclaimed super held on your behalf.
You may like to consider consolidating such accounts with ESSSuper in our Accumulation Plan.
