Plan today for the life you want tomorrow

Super News

Ask many people nearing retirement age ‘what’s most important for you?’ and it’s no surprise that financial security is near the top of the list. But getting the most from the next phase of your life can be about so much more. Here’s a few things worth considering that may help you to make a successful, fulfilling transition.

Retirement. For some of us it holds the promise of new horizons, new experiences and time to slow down a little and smell the roses. For others it can be a time of uncertainty, of saying goodbye to the habits of a working lifetime and asking; ‘what comes next’? No matter how you feel now, the fact is, retirement happens to all of us sooner or later. And how much you enjoy yours, how you set yourself up to make the most of it can be directly linked to the plans you put in place in the years leading up to it.

What 'shape' will your new life look like?

Grandparents playing with their grandchildren

We’ve all heard the saying, ‘the world is your oyster’. But sometimes too much choice can be as troublesome as too little. So, when you start thinking about the retirement-plans you’d like to make a reality, it’s important to know what’s really important for you (and your partner). Would you like to travel more? Is getting involved in a community group or volunteering something that you always wanted to do but could never spare the time? Is looking after grandchildren or another loved one part of the picture? Imagining the ‘shape’ of your post work life is the foundation upon which you’ll build the plan and set aside the financial resources you need to achieve it. Why not grab a pen now and jot down some thoughts on your ideal retirement!

What about your physical and mental wellbeing?

It’s never too early to start the work required to make sure you enter retirement in the best possible physical and mental shape. Start in your 50’s with a gentle program of good nutrition and moderate, regular exercise and you can set yourself up right. You may even find time to learn a new skill or language. Perhaps most importantly, don’t think about retirement as the end but rather as the beginning of a new era.

Give your finances a pre-retirement workout, starting today

Are you currently making sure your finances work as hard as you do? Do you know how much super you’ve got and how much you’ll need? Some financial advisers suggest a target for retirement income is around 60% of your salary at retirement.1 You can check your current super balance by visiting Members Online.
